Hitler dictated most of the first volume of his book while he was in Landsburg prison to his deputy Rudolf Hess.

Its original title was "Four and a half years of struggle against lies, stupidity and cowardice".

The book's publisher, Max Aman, advised him to summarize it only as "my struggle" and gave this book, which included his autobiography and a presentation of his ideological doctrine, to Dietrich Eckhart, a member of the secret society known as the "Thatel Society".
